What is Sciatica?

People often come to me after suffering from sciatica for weeks, months, and even years.

In fact, some experts estimate that up to 40% of people will experience sciatica at some point in their lives.

When sciatica strikes it can become debilitating very quickly.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body…

It runs from the lower back down the leg and ends right below the knee.

When this large nerve becomes irritated it can cause everything from numbness and tingling to excruciating pain.

Typically, this pain is aggravated by longer periods of sitting.

Causes of Sciatica

There are several spinal and joint conditions that can cause sciatica that may require injections or even surgery to treat.

But most people are surprised to learn that sciatica can also be caused by a little-known muscular condition called Piriformis Syndrome.

The piriformis muscle is a very small muscle that is located deep in the buttock, behind the gluteus maximus.

It is responsible for helping to stabilize the hip joint and rotate the leg and foot outward.

But when the piriformis muscle becomes tight and tense, it can compress the sciatic nerve and cause excruciating pain in the lower back and leg.

Treatment for Piriformis Syndrome

While Piriformis Syndrome can be a painful nuisance, to say the least, there is good news…

Unlike other causes of sciatica, Piriformis Syndrome can typically be treated without injections, adjustments or surgery.

In fact, since Piriformis Syndrome is a muscular disorder, many people have found relief with a simple series of targeted stretching movements.

There are a wide variety of simple stretches that can release the piriformis muscle…

Some can even be done quickly and easily while sitting in a chair.

But the key to achieving long-term relief, and preventing future flare-ups comes from correcting the imbalances in the body that caused the piriformis muscle to tighten in the first place.

It all comes down to the right series of simple movements…

To release the muscles that pull the spine out of its natural alignment…

And stabilize the hips and pelvis for long-term healthy joints.
